Count of Rosenborg
Count von Rosenborg (Greve af Rosenborg) has been the official hereditary title since 1914 given to Danish princes who were excluded from the line of succession and belonging to the Danish royal family through improper marriages . First awarded on February 5, 1914 to Aage, the eldest son of Prince Waldemar of Denmark , the last award to Christian , the youngest son of Prince Canute of Denmark , took place on February 27, 1971 . Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen was named after the title .
In the hierarchy of the Kingdom of Denmark, the Counts of Rosenborg have priority in 1st class over the feudal counts, i.e. the long-established Danish count families who rank in 2nd class. Instead of the predicate for Royal Prince Highness , which was still granted to the first Counts of Rosenborg, Aage, Erik and Viggo , their descendants and the later Counts of Rosenborg are entitled to the title of Excellence . The daughter of a Greve af Rosenborg is a Countess af Rosenborg .
Between 1914 and 1971 a total of seven Danish princes were demoted to Counts of Rosenborg:
In 1914, 1923 and 1924 three of the four sons of Prince Waldemar of Denmark , Aage, Erik and Viggo . His son Axel (1888–1964), Prince of Denmark, was the father of Flemming, since 1949 Count of Rosenborg.
Oluf , the youngest son of Prince Harald of Denmark , became Count of Rosenborg in 1948.
Finally, the two sons Ingolf and Christian of Prince Knut of Denmark became Counts of Rosenborg in 1968 and 1971.
The marriages of Count Viggo and Ingolf von Rosenborg remained childless. Aage's line went out in 1995 with his only childless son. Count Christian has three daughters who married between 1995 and 2004 and thus lost their titles.
The three remaining lines of Counts Erik, Flemming and Oluf continue to flourish.
