Life

childhood and education

Waldemar was born on October 27, 1858 at Bernstorff Castle and baptized on December 21 of the same year. He grew up with his brothers Friedrich and Wilhelm and his sisters Alexandra , Dagmar and Thyra in Denmark's capital Copenhagen .

In March 1863 the Danish royal family, including the then four-year-old Waldemar, traveled to London to attend the wedding of Princess Alexandra to Crown Prince Edward . After the death of Frederick VII in November 1863, Waldemar's father became King of Denmark.

As usual for a prince, he was tutored by tutors and governesses . In the summer of 1874 Waldemar accompanied his father to Iceland on the occasion of the millennium of the colonization of the island. After passing an entrance exam, he began his military training at the Royal Naval Academy . In 1879 he was promoted to lieutenant and a few later to lieutenant . He also later took part in several expeditions. From 1883 he lived at Bernstorff Castle with his nephew Prince Georg of Greece , who he took care of.

marriage

On October 20, 1885, Waldemar married Princess Marie d'Orléans , daughter of Robert d'Orléans, duc de Chartres and his wife Françoise d'Orléans, in a civil ceremony in Paris . A religious ceremony was held on October 22nd at Castle Eu , the residence of the Count of Paris . There was first talk of a political marriage arranged by the Count of Paris, the bride's uncle. However, the couple themselves spoke of a love marriage.

Marie and Waldemar had five children. It was decided that the sons should be baptized Lutheran just like Waldemar and the daughter Catholic like Marie. The sons kept their religion for life. Margaretha, the only daughter, was raised Catholic just like her mother and eventually married a Catholic prince.

Next life

Waldemar had a lifelong marine career. He was also a passionate sailor. His wife Marie also shared this passion, who had an anchor tattooed on her upper arm as a sign of solidarity . He was also the first president of the sailors' association founded in 1856.

Prince Waldemar was offered a European throne twice. After the sovereign who wanted independence from Russia and the following pro-Russian regents were overthrown in the Principality of Bulgaria in 1886 , the newly elected Bulgarian National Assembly sought a compromise and on November 1, 1886, unanimously elected Valdemar as the new prince. Although Waldemar was the brother-in-law of the Russian Tsar Alexander III. was, he did not get his support, whereupon in early 1887 the Danish king rejected the election on behalf of his son. Waldemar's brother Georg was also king of Greece, which was hostile to Bulgaria. Furthermore, neither he nor his wife wanted to move to Bulgaria. He was also offered the Norwegian throne after it became vacant. Waldemar also turned down this offer from Tsar Nicholas II and Kaiser Wilhelm II . His nephew Carl became King of Norway in 1905 .

Prince Waldemar died on January 14, 1939 in the Yellow Palace in Copenhagen. He found his final resting place in Roskilde Cathedral . He was the last living child of “ Europe's father-in-law ”, King Christian IX.
