Christian von Rosenborg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian Frederik Franz Knud Harald Carl Oluf Gustav Georg Erik Graf von Rosenborg (born October 22, 1942 at Sorgefri Castle near Copenhagen ; † May 21, 2013 in Gentofte , Copenhagen) was a member of the Danish royal family of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg family . He was the youngest son of Hereditary Prince Knud and Hereditary Princess Caroline Mathilde and the cousin of the Danish Queen Margrethe .

biography

When Christian was born, after his father Knud and his older brother, he was third in line to the throne, in which female descendants were not yet included. When the Danish constitution was changed in terms of succession in favor of the daughters of King Frederik , he fell back to seventh place in the ranking of the heir to the throne, but still retained the title of Prince of Denmark , which he was entitled to as the grandson of a monarch. When he got married improperly in 1971, this was withdrawn from him and the title Graf von Rosenborg , created in 1914 for family members who were not entitled to the throne, was assigned.

On February 27, 1971, he married the commoner Anne Dorte Maltoft-Nielsen (1947-2014) in Lyngby near Copenhagen , who became Countess of Rosenborg through marriage. The couple lived in the so-called Damebygningen, a side wing of Sorgefri Castle near Copenhagen, and had three daughters together:

Christian's older sister Elisabeth was the only one of his siblings left in the Danish line of succession until her death in 2018. Christian's older brother Ingolf is also excluded from the line of succession due to an improper marriage; like Christian, he bears the title of Count of Rosenborg.

On May 22, 2013 it was officially announced by the Court Marshal that Christian von Rosenborg had died on May 21, 2013 after a long illness in Gentofte Hospital . In the presence of the Danish royal family, the funeral ceremonies took place in Lyngby Kirke on May 29, 2013 .
