Prince Harald of Denmark , full name Harald Christian Frederik of Denmark (born October 8, 1876 at Charlottenlund Palace near Copenhagen , † March 30, 1949 in Copenhagen) was a member of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg family , a branch of the Oldenburg family .

Life

Harald was the third son of King Frederick VIII of Denmark (1843–1912) and his wife Queen Louise (1851–1926), daughter of King Charles XV. of Sweden-Norway and Princess Luise of Orange-Nassau . His older brothers were King Christian X of Denmark and King Haakon VII of Norway .

At the age of seventeen, Prince Harald joined the Danish army. He later served in the Gardehusar Regimentet, among others, and resigned at the age of fifty with the rank of major general . In 1933 his brother, King Christian X. appointed him lieutenant general . On July 28, 1894, Prince Harald became a Knight of the Elephant Order and on October 11, 1901, he was made Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order . Harald was a member of the Danish Order of Freemasons .

Prince Harald married his second cousin, Princess Helena of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1888–1962), a daughter of Duke Friedrich Ferdinand, at Glücksburg Castle on April 28, 1909 . The couple moved into a mansion in Jægersborg, north of Copenhagen, where their four oldest children were born. In 1918/1919 the family then moved into a villa built for them in the north of Copenhagen.

As Prince of Denmark, he was buried in the traditional burial place of the royal family in Roskilde Cathedral.
