Alexandrine-Louise of Denmark ( Alexandrine-Louise Caroline-Mathilde Dagmar ) (born December 12, 1914 at Jaegersborghus in Gentofte near Copenhagen ; † April 26, 1962 in Copenhagen) was a Danish princess from the house of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg , a branch line of the House of Oldenburg . By marriage she was Countess zu Castell-Castell . Before her marriage, she was often discussed as the possible wife of King Edward VIII of England .

Princess Alexandrine-Louise was the third child of Prince Harald of Denmark and his wife Princess Helena of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg . Her paternal grandparents were the Danish King Frederick VIII and Queen Louise . Alexandrine-Louise was a niece of the Danish King Christian X.

Alexandrine-Louise had four siblings. Her brother Gorm was a member of the Danska brigaden (German "Danish Brigade") during World War II , which was pursuing plans for the liberation of Denmark from Sweden . Her sister Caroline-Mathilde was Crown Princess of Denmark at the side of her husband Prince Knut from 1947 until 1953, when the succession to the throne was changed in favor of the reigning Queen Margrethe II . Alexandrine-Louise, on the other hand, married to Germany, just like her sister Feodora .

Marriage and children

On January 22, 1937, Alexandrine-Louise married the German officer Luitpold Graf zu Castell-Castell (* 1904 in Langenzell ) at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen . The couple met in 1936 at the Olympic Games in Berlin . At that time, Count Luitpold was studying law in Munich . His parents were Otto Friedrich Graf zu Castell-Castell and Amelie Princess von Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg . Count Luitpold took part in the Second World War as a first lieutenant and died in Bulgaria in 1941 as a result of a plane crash. Alexandrine-Louise died a widow in Copenhagen in 1962 .

The marriage of Alexandrine-Louise and Luitpold zu Castell-Castell had three children:

Alexandrine-Louise's daughter Thyra lives in Denmark, her husband is a Danish wine and antiques dealer.
