Duchy of Ventadour

The vice-county of Ventadour (and later county of Ventadour ) in today's Corrèze department , one of the four great lordships of the Limousin , is named after the Ventadour castle in the municipality of Moustier-Ventadour .

The Vice-County of Ventadour was joined to the Vice-County of Comborn in the 10th century . After Archambaud II's death (before 1038) it was severed when it went to the eldest son, Ebles, whose descendants they kept in direct line.

At the end of the 14th century, the castle was owned for a time by the robber baron Geoffroy Tête Noir, whose nephews besieged him there.

Several gentlemen of Ventadour played a part in French poetry as troubadours ; among them is not Bernard de Ventadour († 1190/1200), who is the son of a local farmer. Ebles II. De Ventadour is one of the first court poets of the Limousin, Marguerite, his daughter-in-law, wife of Ebles III. († 1170), was the muse of Bernard de Ventadour. Marie, the wife of Ebles V. († 1221), was the host of the last generation of troubadours (Gaucelm Faidit, Guy d'Ussel) and also the author of several poems.

Vice-Count Bernard became lord of Montpensier in 1358 , which was elevated to a county on April 2, 1350. As a result, he led from 1363 the title of Count of Ventadour. Montpensier himself sold his sons Robert and Bernard in 1381 for 40,000 livres to Duke Johann von Berry .

Robert's younger son Charles, † 1486, was a Connétable of France .
