The Grain Heads is a hill in the Pentland Hills . The 532 m high elevation lies in the center of the approximately 25 km long range of hills on the northern border of the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders . The closest settlement is the hamlet of Carlops about two kilometers to the southeast. West Linton is three miles south and Penicuik is nine kilometers northeast. The surrounding hills include Mount Maw in the south, Colzium Hill and West Cairn Hill in the west, Wether Law in the north and Patie's Hill in the northeast.

Surroundings

The hill is located between two reservoirs , the North Esk Reservoir to the northeast and the Baddinsgill Reservoir to the southwest. A stream that rises on the slopes between Grain Heads and Wether Law flows into the North Esk Reservoir, while three streams on the west and south flanks feed the Baddinsgill Reservoir. The Fairliehope Burn , which rises on the eastern flank, flows below the reservoir into the North Esk , which runs along the eastern flank.

At the site of today's Spittal Farm on the eastern flank of the Grain Heads there was probably once a hospital ( Hospital ) or a recovery station for travelers from possibly the name of Spittal Hills derives. No traces of the building have been preserved, but a stone dating from 1641 is built into the barn of the farm, which could originally have come from the hospital.
