Harold Gramatges
Harold Gramatges (born September 26, 1918 in Santiago de Cuba , † December 16, 2008 in Havana ) was a Cuban composer and composition teacher .
Gramatges was a student of Aaron Copland . He led a composition class at the Havana Conservatory and previously taught music aesthetics and history there. From 1961 to 1964 he was Cuban ambassador to France . He then headed the music department he founded at the Casa de las Américas cultural center in Havana.
He composed a symphony , a sinfonietta and other orchestral works, chamber music , a piece for prepared piano, a sonatina for harpsichord, guitar pieces, a piece for speaker and orchestra and songs .
In April 2003 Gramatges was among a group of prominent Cuban cultural worker, the one in the newspaper of the Cuban Communist Party , Granma criticizing the published call signed, which was addressed to friends of Cuba throughout the world and international human rights policy rejected by the Cuban government as anti-Cuba smear campaign : In the previous weeks, President Fidel Castro had sentenced 75 critical journalists and civil rights activists to long prison terms in a wave of arrests known as the " Black Spring " and had three young black Cubans executed after a bloodlessly unsuccessful attempt to hijack a ship.
