Xavier Benguerel i Godó (born February 9, 1931 in Barcelona ; † August 10, 2017 ) was a Spanish composer .

biography

Xavier Benguerel's father, the writer Xavier Benguerel i Llobet , was forced to go into exile in South America after the end of the Spanish civil war . His son Xavier Benguerel received his first musical training from 1941 to 1945 in Santiago de Chile . In the field of composition, however, he was largely self-taught. After his return to Barcelona in 1954 he received lessons from Cristòfor Taltabull . In 1955 he won first prize in the composition competition of the Juventudes Musicales de Barcelona , of which he became a member in 1959. Benguerel's career began in 1960 with a performance at the Festival of the International Society for New Music in Cologne. Since then his works have been performed regularly and many have been published in Germany. In 1963 he co-founded the Festival Internacional de Música de Barcelona . In the following years he received important composition commissions from the city of The Hague, the Schütz Festival in Berlin, the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, the Biennale in Zagreb, the English Bach Festival in London as well as the Orquesta National Madrid and the Spanish radio station RTVE . In 1977 he was awarded the Premio Luigi Dallapiccola for his complete works . Benguerel was a member of Confluèncias , an independent group of Catalan composers. He lived as a freelance composer in Barcelona.
