Gramoz Pashko

Gramoz Pashko (born February 11, 1955 in Tirana , † July 16, 2006 in the Adriatic Sea between Albania and Italy) was an Albanian economist and politician . In 1990 he was one of the founding members of the Democratic Party ; most recently he was rector of a private university in Tirana.

Life

Gramoz Pashko studied at the University of Tirana and obtained a diploma in economics in 1977, a master's degree in the same subject in 1983 and a doctorate in economics in 1989. Until the fall of the Berlin Wall, he worked as a lecturer at the economic faculty in Tirana. In 1993 he was appointed professor.

In the fall of 1990, Pashko was one of the students and lecturers who drove the anti-communist revolution in Tirana. In December of the same year he co-founded the Democratic Party, the first non-communist political force in Albania . For a short time he was Deputy Minister of Economics in the 1991 interim government. For the Democrats, Pashko then moved in 1992 as a member of the Albanian Parliament .

He later switched to the small liberal party Aleanca Demokratie before he withdrew from political life in Albania to work again as a lecturer in economics. For four years, Pashko was a member of a body that advised the socialist Prime Minister Fatos Nano on economic issues.

Gramoz Pashko became the rector of the New York State University branch in Tirana in 2002 . On July 6, 2006, he presented the first students with their diplomas. A few days later he fell into a coma near Dhërmi due to a swimming accident with a head injury . He was supposed to be flown to Bari, Italy, by helicopter for treatment . However, the helicopter crashed over the Adriatic Sea on July 16 . Gramoz Pashko and five other people were killed.
