The Grand Hotel Russischer Hof is a hotel in Weimar . Among his guests were, for example, Franz Liszt , Richard Wagner , Johann Wolfgang Goethe , Tsar Alexander I and Giacomo Meyerbeer .

architecture

The historical part of the house was built in 1805 in the classicism style. The three-story building was covered with a gable roof. It was structured by a multi-axis central projection with a triangular gable and oculus , flanked by the two four-axis side wings.

In 1907 the house was renovated according to the taste of the time, the facade was decorated with Art Nouveau ornaments and the basement was provided with sliding windows. During a thorough renovation of the house in 1961, the old appearance of the facade was restored, albeit in simplified classical forms.

history

In 1805, Countess Henkel and wife von Egloffstein bought an unfinished house on the edge of the old town center, the former pig market, to convert it into an inn. Since a year earlier, in 1804, the Russian tsar's daughter Maria Pawlowna , the future daughter-in-law of Duke Carl August , Goethe's friend and confidante, had moved into Weimar with great splendor, the house was named "Alexanderhof" after the tsar. The construction, which began in 1803, is based on a design by Anton Georg Hauptmann .

Following the battle of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806, the "Alexanderhof" initially served as a military hospital. Johanna Schopenhauer , Arthur Schopenhauer's mother, was among the volunteers . Around 1840 the hotel was called the "Russischer Hof", and in 1841 the name became official. After the unrest of the war, the postal expedition moved into the Alexanderhof and stayed there, with interruptions, until 1857. The large entrance door, which was still there until the renovation in 1981, served as the entrance to the Posthof with its stables. The large inn was used for various purposes besides being a hotel. The spectrum ranged from the exhibition of exotic animals to art exhibitions, e.g. B. of works by the artists Liebe and Carl August Schwerdgeburth .

During the time of National Socialist rule, the "Russian Court" was renamed "Fürstenhof".

Hotel guests

The growth of the city was the reason to upgrade the former pig market in terms of urban development and to transform it into the new Karlsplatz with tree planting . The "Russian Court" attracted numerous important guests with its inviting surroundings.

In 1841 the hotel was the stage for a meeting between Franz Liszt , Clara and Robert Schumann . It was Liszt's first stay in Weimar before he took over the musical direction of the Weimar Opera from 1848 as court conductor. Friedrich Hebbel and the sculptor Ernst Rietschel , the creator of the Goethe-Schiller monument, added to the number of famous prominent guests . The actress Eleonora Duse stayed in the Russian court, as did the Russian poets Turgenev and Tolstoy .

The "Wednesday Society", also known as the key association, was founded here as early as 1847. Its purpose was scientific entertainment and conversation. The Russian Court advanced to become the social center of the post-classical period and was the founding site of civil associations, including the artists' association. Its members included initially the masters of the Weimar School of Painting , later also the masters of the Weimar Bauhaus .

Post war history

After the Second World War, the hotel got its old name back and became the property of the Thuringia regional association of the GDR CDU . From 1961 to 1962 it was thoroughly renovated on the outside according to monument preservation criteria, rebuilt inside and expanded with an extension. In 1997 the hotel was taken over by Derag Hotel and Living. It has been a member of the Best Western Hotel Cooperation since January 1, 2010 , and the hotel was renamed the Best Western Premier Grand Hotel Russischer Hof zu Weimar .
