The Grand Hotel Sopot is a hotel building in Sopot ( Sopot ), Poland . It has been operating under the name " Sofitel Grand Sopot" since 2010 .

history

The Grand Hotel Sopot was built from 1924 to 1927 as a casino hotel near the center on the Baltic Sea beach, near the Sopot jetty , in neo-baroque style. The construction costs at that time amounted to 20 million Danzig guilders .

In September 1939, Adolf Hitler and his entourage were staying in the casino hotel while visiting the front. Towards the end of the war, a hospital was housed in the hotel .

From 1946 to 1951 the hotel became the property of the Gdynia-Ameryka Line Żeglugowe and was renamed "Grand Hotel". After the merger with several other shipping companies in 1951, the hotel became the property of Polskie Linie Oceaniczne . Orbis SA became the new owner in 1954. Today, this company operates the hotel as Sofitel on behalf of the Accor Group .

In 1965 the group " Czerwone Gitary ", one of the most popular Polish music groups, made their stage debut in the hotel . From September 11 to 16, 1966, the “ Pugwash ” conference (Disarmament and World Security, Especially in Europe) took place in the building.

Before the political change in Poland there should have been an illegal casino in the hotel. In 1990, the third casino in Poland was officially opened there.
