Lindner studied stage technology and construction in Leipzig , Berlin and Dresden and became theater master in the ducal Saxon court theater in Gotha in 1840 . From 1841 he also began to work as an architect and site manager in Coburg, made possible by the dual duchy of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha . In September 1849 he became ducal building manager and in this position played a key role in the renovation of Veste Coburg from 1851 to 1859, but also continued to take on private assignments as a planner and site manager. From 1851 he worked as a member of the planning committee for the new construction of the St. Augustin church in Festungsstrasse.

Lindner demonstrated a talent for decoration and organization in the implementation of the 2nd Singers' Day in 1855, the first German Gymnastics Festival in 1860, the conference of the German National Association and other festivities. 1862, Duke Ernst II appointed Lindner as ducal building inspector. His so-called Lindner albums with views of the city and its buildings from 1850 are important historical image sources. The albums are kept in the city archive, in the Coburg State Library and in the art collections of the Veste Coburg . They also provide information about no longer existing or significantly changed buildings.
