history

The company was founded in Lviv in 1920 as Polskie Biuro Podróży Orbis . In 1933 the company headquarters was relocated to Warsaw after the bank PKO BP ( Powszechna Kasa Oszczędności ) had acquired the majority of the shares. In 1939 the company had 136 sales offices in Poland, 19 abroad and 4 hotels. The company had a total of 500 employees.

The Second World War interrupted the company's operations and much of its assets were lost. At the end of the war, only the offices in Brussels , New York , Tel Aviv and London existed .

As early as 1944, a state-owned company Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe Orbis was founded by taking over the shares of the pre-war company. Some intercity bus routes were established in Poland by the end of the 1940s. Hotels were also resumed. At the end of the 1950s, Orbis managed 5,000 hotel beds, including 9 hotels for international guests. Orbis also organized trips abroad. In 1980 Orbis operated 60% of all hotel beds in Poland. Orbis operated 6 Novotel hotels in the 1970s, 4 of which are still in operation today. At the same time, the company expanded the passenger transport sector. In 1980 the company had 555 buses and 373 cars. Orbis operated 53 hotels at the end of 1990.

In 1991, Qrbis was transformed from a state-owned company into a private company that was 100% state-owned. In July 1993 two subsidiaries were spun off, Orbis Travel and Orbis Transport , in both of which Orbis SA held the majority. Orbis SA has been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since November 15, 1997 . In 1999 the state share sank to below 50%. In August 2000, the Accor Group became a strategic partner and took over the remaining shares from the Polish state. In 2010 the Orbis hotel group operated 61 hotels in Poland and one in Lithuania .

On September 29, 2010, PBP Orbis , the former subsidiary Orbis Travel , which was sold to the financial investor Enterprise Investors in March 2010 , filed for bankruptcy.
