The grizzly or light gray Fleckleibbär ( Diaphora mendica ) is a moth from the subfamily of the tiger moth (Arctiinae).
features
The moths reach a wingspan of about 30 millimeters. The species is characterized by a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The males are gray-brown, whereas the females are bright white with a few black spots. Both have furry heads. The females resemble those of Spilosoma lubricipeda , but they do not have the conspicuous black and yellow warning coat on their abdomen.

- American weaver ( Hyphantria cunea )
- Broad-winged Fleckleibbär ( Spilosoma lubricipeda )
- Gelber Fleckleibbär ( Spilosoma lutea )
Occurrence
They occur all over Europe , except in the far north and the Mediterranean area . They live in pine heaths , damp meadows and heather moors.
Flight and caterpillar times
One generation of the grizzly flies from April to early July. It is one of the earliest species to fly among the spotted bears. There are indications that a partial second generation can be formed in southern Central Europe. So far there is no evidence of this in Baden-Württemberg and Thuringia. Caterpillars with different stages of development were found from July to October.
food
The caterpillars are polyphagous and feed on the following plant species, among others:
- Yellow Iris ( Iris pseudacorus )
- Common hawthorn ( Crataegus monogyna )
- Raspberry ( Rubus idaeus )
- Blue-green bedstraw ( Galium glaucum )
- Meadow bedstraw ( Galium mollugo )
- Middle plantain ( Platago media )
- Black elder ( Sambucus nigra )
- Thistle ( Cirsium spec. )
- Scabiosa knapweed ( Centaurea scabiosa )
- Stiff-haired dandelion ( Leontodon hispidus )
- Common dandelion ( Taraxacum officinale )
Development path
The female lays the round, slightly greenish eggs on leaves. The caterpillars that hatch from it pupate at the end of summer on the ground in a gray web. The moths only hatch after the winter.
