Gravelotte is a South African mining town in the Ba-Phalaborwa municipality , Mopani district , Limpopo province . It is located around 54 kilometers by road southeast of Tzaneen . In 2011 Gravelotte had 1,098 inhabitants in 503 households.

description

The place name Gravelotte goes back to a farm that belonged to a Prussian missionary who took part in the Battle of Gravelotte (1870–1871) in France . Gravelotte is located at a fork in the regional roads R71 and R526.

The area belongs to the Bushveld region west of the Kruger National Park . The range of hills of the Murchison Range extends to the northeast . It is a mining region where antimony and arsenic ores as well as gemstones occur.

The place can be reached by land via the regional road R71, which forms an important link between Polokwane and the national road N1 to Phalaborwa . The R526 also leads from the south to Gravelotte and joins the R71 in the village. In addition, Gravelotte has a train station on the railway line between Morebeng and Kaapmuiden . Gravelotte Airport is located to the north-east of the Murchison settlement .

economy

The place has been associated with mining activities in the nearby Murchison Range since its inception.

A project started in 2018 has taken up the mining of emeralds near Gravelotte again. The emeralds are extracted from a pegmatitic deposit.
