Great Falls is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County , Virginia in the United States . In 2000 the village had 8,549 inhabitants.
The place is mostly a residential area for commuters working in Washington, DC , but offers with the Great Falls Park and the Great Falls of the Potomac River located in it a significant attraction. George Washington was involved in the construction of a canal to the southwest, on the river side of Virginia, around the falls, but the waterway called the Patowmack Canal was economically unsustainable. Remnants of the canal and a village on the canal called Matildaville are visible in the park.

Great Falls' geographic coordinates are 39 ° 0 ′ N , 77 ° 17 ′ W (38.9981653, −77.2883157). The area is sparsely populated. The major roads in Great Falls are Virginia State Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) and Virginia State Route 193 (Georgetown Pike).
According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has an area of 46.4 km², of which 46.3 km² is land and 0.1 km² (0.22%) is water.
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Great Falls had 8,549 people. The population density was 184.7 people per km ². There were 2852 housing units at an average of 61.6 per km ². The Great Falls population was 92.83% White , 1.20% Black or African American , 0.14% Native American , 4.40% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.43% said others Belonging to races and 1.95% named two or more races. 2.56% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Great Falls distributed to 2785 households out of which 44.5% were living in children under 18 years of age. 82.4% of households were married, 4.2% had a female head of household without a husband, and 11.5% were not families. 8.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 2.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.07 and the average family size was 3.23.
The population was divided into 29.5% minors, 4.1% 18–24 year olds, 22.1% 25–44 year olds, 35.9% 45–64 year olds and 8.5% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 women there were 102.7 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 98.1 men.
The median household income in Great Falls was 159,695 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 170,618 US dollars. history
The settlement used to be called Forestville, but that name was not official because the Shenandoah County's non-incorporated Forestville settlement had a post office. In 1955 the town was named Great Falls. From 1906 on, the Great Falls and Old Dominion Railroad ran along Old Dominion Drive to Great Falls Park.
education
The public schools are operated by Fairfax County. Great Falls students attend either Great Falls Elementary School or Forestville Elementary School. Then they go to Cooper Middle School.
The Fairfax County Public Library operates a library in Great Falls.
