The Gredinger whitebeam ( Karpatiosorbus schuwerkiorum ) is a tree species with sixty specimens near Greding . They are on land owned by six private owners, the city of Greding and the district of Roth am Pfaffenberg behind the Buganderl-Keller and a small area near Mettendorf . Previously, the species was assigned to the genus Sorbus (Mehlberren). Since 2017 it has been in the genus Karpatiosorbus ( bastard whitebeam ).

description

The Gredinger whitebeam is a hybridogenic local clan with agamosperm reproduction, which arose as a hybrid of the species real whitebeam ( Sorbus aria ) and service tree ( Sorbus torminalis ). The numerous hybridogenic small species, each of which goes back independently of one another to a cross with the subsequent spread of the hybrid, are listed within the genus Sorbus in a subgenus Tornaria , alternatively in an independent hybrid genus ( Nothogus ) Karpatiosorbus Sennikov & Kurtto. They are often grouped into a diverse collection of bastard whitebeams ( Sorbus latifolia agg.). All are thornless shrubs or small trees up to about 10 meters tall with undivided leaves, the underside of which is hairy white to gray-tomentose. The white flowers sit in umbels of 15 to 20 individual flowers, each with two to three styles . The relatively large fruits resemble small apples, they have a floury consistency. The more than 80 small species of the species aggregate can only be clearly distinguished by specialists. The leaf shape and hairiness of the leaves on the short shoots and the shape of the fruit are essential for the determination .

The Gredinger whitebeam differs from the other species of the species aggregate in the following features: The rather coarse leaves are rounded-ovoid to obovate in outline, with a broad, wedge-shaped base. They are only slightly and indistinctly lobed, with incisions less than 6 millimeters deep. They are fresh green and matt on the top. The fruits are oval and orange-red in color, they reach a diameter of about 13 to 15 millimeters.

The tree species prefers a calcareous and warm location with lots of light.

The species epithet goes back to the Schuwerk couple from Pappenheim, who discovered the species 30 years ago.
