Joachim Greff (* around 1510 in Zwickau ; † November 11th  ? 1552 in Roßlau ) was a German educator, Lutheran theologian and Reformation dramatist.

Life

Greff studied Protestant theology at the University of Wittenberg in 1529 and then went to school. So he worked in Halle (Saale) , from 1534 in Magdeburg , then in Dessau and from 1550 he was active as a pastor in Roßlau . Greff was encouraged by Martin Luther to deal with drama and was influenced by neo-Latin poets during his creative period.

In 1535 he translated the Aulularia des Plautus , revised stories by Abraham in 1540 and by Jakob in 1534 , which were performed in Magdeburg at the Schützenhof, with his participation. In his revisions to Susanna in 1534 and to Judith in 1536 , a calm mood of faith can be recognized, which affected the citizens of Central Germany and encouraged them to shape their environment in confessional disputes. Thus he propagated the new Protestant teaching in school dramas.

In the dispute over a theatrical performance, he got involved in a dispute with the Anhalt theologians and received support in this dispute from Philipp Melanchthon and Georg Major , who gave their opinions on it. His morally and religiously instructive pieces presented biblical topics in the then current context, dispensed with staged splendor and concentrated on the message of the event. Greff was instrumental in the development of the Saxon Reformation drama.
