history

During the preparation of the 700th anniversary celebration in 2012, the celebratory committee found that, contrary to what was previously known about Grefrath, a document from 1310 already exists with the following wording:

Heinrich de Randenrade (Randerath) Herr von Grefrath (Greuerode) and his wife Jutta free for their salvation and from the alms (elemosiam) of their goods, the goods of the Cologne Johanniter in the corridor (in agris) called upme Sunthoilta, the belong to the Fetschereihof (zu den Vetzereyen) of the Johanniter and depend on the court of the exhibitors in Grefrath, on all legal claims and burdens (ab omni iure et onere), which they and their heirs 8 shillings annually on St. Martin (November 11) Cologne Pagaments (Pagamenti Coloniensis cummuniter currentis) figures. If the goods are vacant, Johanniter should present someone at the exhibitor's yard in Grefrath who will take possession of the goods for them and pay 8 schillings to receive the goods (pro iure conquisitiones et receptionis). Date: in vilgilia nativitatis Johannis Baptiste, ad 1310.
(Note: witnesses and seals are no longer legible.)

It is very likely that this document does not concern "our Grefrath", but Grefrath bei Neuss. The Kultur- und Heimatverein Grefrath eV reported in its brochure "Unter uns ... Issue 3 - History meets the present - (2019)" under the title "How old is Grefrath" about the first mention of Grefrath (which is known to this day).

Grefrath is mentioned again on June 15, 1312 in a document from the Bottenbroich monastery : Knight Theodoricus, called Vlecke, renounced the right to the stream that flowed to Grefrath mill (copy of the document in the Grefrath parish archive). Since 1479 Grefrath belonged to Jülich (rule Hemmersbach and Sindorf). After the French occupied the Rhineland in the coalition wars in 1797, Grefrath became part of the newly formed Mairie Türnich in the canton of Kerpen . In 1727 Grefrath got its own school "Auf dem Driesch" after Baron von Vercken from the Hemmersbach manor house had requested the establishment in 1690.

One of the oldest map photos of Grefrath can be found in the rule of Kerpen and Lommersum (Gerhard Stempel, Cologne 1587) on the right edge of the map as "Griven Rodt".

On January 1, 1975, Grefrath became part of Frechen due to the Cologne Act .

Catholic parish church

Church of the Assumption of Mary

The Catholic parish church of St. Mary of the Assumption has a number of art objects of great importance. Most of these come from the lost Bottenbroich monastery : a first-rate Pietà from 1420/1430, a highly venerated image of grace in the Middle Ages; a triumphal cross on the altar wall around 1500, Cologne, Tillmann de Burch; the reconstruction of a glass window with tracery from 1533 (original in the Diözesanmuseum Cologne); five detached wall paintings from a Passion cycle from the first half of the 16th century; an alabaster relief Adoration of the Magi, England around 1360; other sculptures from the 16th to 19th centuries; Liturgical objects from the 15th century onwards are partly exhibited in showcases. The parish has its own parish archive, the documents of which go back to the beginning of the 17th century.
