Gregorio Correr

Gregorio Correr (* 1409 in Venice , † November 19, 1464 in Verona ) was an Italian humanist and clergyman and came from a noble Venetian family.

Antonio Correr, co-founder of the Canons Regular of San Giorgio in Alga , was his uncle, Pope Gregory XII. his great uncle . Gregorio Correr was born by Vittorino da Feltre in Mantua at the court of Luigi III. Gonzagas educated. Pope Eugene IV , also his uncle, appointed him Apostolic Protonotary . At the Council of Constance he supported his uncle Antonio as secretary. From 1448 he was abbot in the Benedictine monastery of San Zeno Maggiore in Verona, for which he commissioned the famous San Zeno altar from Andrea Mantegna around 1456 .
