Gregorio Jover (1930)

Gregorio Jover Cortés [ gɾeˈɣoɾjo xoˈβeɾ ] (* 1891 in Teruel ; † March 22, 1964 in Mexico ) was an anarchist and the elected commander of the anarchist 28th Division in the Spanish Civil War , which fought together with the Republic against the Catholics, monarchists and fascists.

As a child, Jover had to emigrate to Valencia and organized himself into socialist and anarchist workers' organizations at an early age .

He trained as a carpenter, briefly became a soldier in Barcelona and was a co-founder of the grupo de afinidad Los Solidarios . He organized with Buenaventura Durruti and others the assassination attempt against Prime Minister Eduardo Dato on March 8, 1921, but was not directly involved.

Jover was with Buenaventura Durruti, Francisco Ascaso and his brother survivors of the Los Solidarios group , most of the members of which were murdered after the dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera came to power and which went into exile in Paris in 1923. Jover worked there in a mattress factory and turned down the offer to become a foreman. In 1924 he went to Latin America with Durruti and returned to Europe in 1926. In 1927 Jover was involved in a plot to assassinate King Alfonso of Spain and the dictator in Paris, was pursued by the police and, after being expelled, went underground.

In 1931, with the proclamation of the Republic, Jover returned to Barcelona and organized the labor dispute of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo . From 1936 he defended the streets of Barcelona and later fought as the elected commander of the anarchist 28th division, the Ascaso column , against the right-wing military under the coup leader Francisco Franco on the front of Aragon . After the defeat, he went into exile with the survivors of his division to Mexico, where he died in 1964.

Along with Ascaso and Durruti, Jover is one of the most prominent figures of anarchism in Spain .
