The Greifenwerder is a stretch of land on the right bank of the Elbe . In the past there was a suburb of the same name here .

location

The Greifenwerder area is now part of the Randau-Calenberge district of Magdeburg . It lies south of Kapitelwerder, a little north of the confluence of the Pfingstwiesengraben on the left into the Elbe. The Greifenwerder is characterized by large meadows and includes the small Fuchsbusch body of water . Trees and small groups of trees occur occasionally. Since the area is not diked, the area is flooded when the Elbe floods.

history

While the areas to the north of Kapitelwerder, Holzwerder and Kreuzhorst were owned by the church, Greifenwerder was privately owned. In 1690 the built Halberstadt canon of Esebeck in the embossed even then of large meadows grabbing Werder a Vorwerk, including on a small hill, the Wies keeper's house . Due to the constant risk of flooding, the Vorwerk was later abandoned, but the house of the meadow guard was preserved. It was surrounded by tall poplars , on which the residents of the house are said to have saved themselves in the event of a flood.

On February 5, 1740, Leopold II. Maximilian von Anhalt-Dessau acquired Greifenwerder from the Esebecks for 3550 thalers for the deanery of Magdeburg's cathedral chapter . The money came from the sale of the wood of the Praepositurwerder the year before, which probably means the Holzwerder a little further north.

Until the 20th century Greifenwerder was an estate district and therefore not part of a municipality. However, parts of the area were not subject to the estate area, but belonged to Westerhüsen . On October 17, 1928, the Greifenwerder manor was united with the rural community of Randau. The house was last inhabited by Pappel-Hahne . On January 21, 1944, the secluded building was destroyed by bombs during World War II and was never rebuilt. The poplars were felled. A well that has been preserved for a long time reminded of the house. Today there is a cattle gate in the assumed area of the meadow keeper's house.

The naming of a street in Randau as Greifenwerder goes back to Greifenwerder. In the local world of legends, the legend of the meadow keeper Marie is known, according to which, after the tragic drowning of her lover, who wanted to go from the meadow keeper's house to the Kuhlenhagen forester's house , Marie lost her mind. After that, it is said to still haunt Greifenwerder and further north in the area of the Westerhüsen ferry .
