The Brnjak border crossing ( Albanian  Vendkalimi kufitar Bërnjakë , Serbian Административни прелаз Брњак Administrativni prelaz Brnjak ) is located in the northwest of Kosovo and connects it with Serbia . From Serbia's point of view, it is not an international border crossing, but merely a police checkpoint within Serbia.

geography

The border crossing is in the valley of the Ibar , which is dammed up to Lake Gazivoda, on the road that connects Mitrovica with the municipality of Tutin and Novi Pazar in southwest Serbia. In Kosovo the road is referred to as M-2 , in Serbia as Bundesstraße 31 . The border crossing is named after the village of Brnjak , which lies a little further west on the other side of the reservoir and belongs to the large municipality of Zubin Potok in northern Kosovo, which is mostly inhabited by Serbs . The village itself can be reached via a bridge over the lake, which is about a kilometer further north and connects the Serbian and Kosovar banks.

Customs conflict 2011

In the context of a customs conflict between Serbia and Kosovo , the Kosovar government arranged in July 2011 to bring the border crossings Brnjak and Jarinje in northern Kosovo under its own control. On the evening of July 26th, the violence escalated and an angry crowd of violent nationalist Serbs set the two border crossings on fire. After KFOR intervened , it was able to calm the situation down, but it has remained fragile.

Since December 2012, the Brnjak and Končulj , Merdare and Jarinje border crossings have been managed by the Serbian and Kosovar police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).
