Grete Thomsen

Grete Thomsen , née Grete Kuhn (born June 23, 1902 in Weidenau , † April 26, 1987 in Lich ) was a German internist and missionary doctor .

Life

Grete Thomsen was born in Weidenau an der Sieg in 1902. After completing her medical degree, she worked at the Evangelical Hospital in Mülheim an der Ruhr and at the University Dermatology Clinic in Erlangen.

In 1933 and 1934 she worked with her husband, the surgeon Martin Thomsen, in a group practice in Gelting . In 1934 the couple went to Indonesia as missionary doctors , where they were initially stationed on the island of Nias near Sumatra and built up a network of medical aid stations. After Martin Thomsen's internment and a stopover at the Diakonissenanstalt hospital in Flensburg (1946–1951) , both resumed their work here in 1951.

In 1970, Grete Thomsen and her husband were awarded the Paracelsus Medal of the German medical profession for decades of humanitarian commitment .
