Grigory Georgievich Belych

Grigori Belykh Georgijewitsch ( Russian Григорий Георгиевич Белых * 7 . Jul / 20th August  1906 greg. , † 14. August 1938 ) was a Soviet writer .

Life and work

Belych was the son of a large working-class family. After the death of his father, he came to the school commune called Dostojewski (SchKID) for homeless and difficult-to-educate young people in the early 1920s . After graduating from school, he became a journalist. Encouraged and supported by Samuil Jakowlewitsch Marschak , he and Leonid Panteleev wrote a book about the SchKID. The youth book Республика ШКИД (literally: Republic of ShKID ) brought both authors fame, but also criticism, for their portrayal of the Soviet educational system. The novel has been translated into numerous languages; it was first published in German in 1930.

In 1935, Belykh was arrested on charges of counter-revolutionary activity ( Article 58 (10) of the RSFSR Criminal Code ). Sentenced to three years in a camp, he died of tuberculosis in a transit prison in 1938 .

Belych was posthumously rehabilitated in 1957. Only then were his works published again in the USSR. In 1966, Republic ShKID was filmed under the direction of Gennady Poloka, and in 2013 the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation included the educational novel by Belykh and Panteleev in the official recommended reading list of 100 books for schoolchildren .
