Grigori Anatoljewitsch Drosd ( Russian Григорий Анатольевич Дрозд ; born August 26, 1979 in Prokopjewsk ) is a Russian professional boxer and current champion in recess of the WBC in cruiserweight .

Athletic career

Drozd began various martial arts in his childhood and youth. In kickboxing he was already the Russian youth champion at the age of 15 and reached third place at the Asian Championships. In amateur Thai boxing , he won the CIS championship in 1995 , and at the age of 17 he was third at the world championships. He then became two-time European champion and 2001 world champion in Bangkok .

After only four amateur boxing fights, he switched to the professional boxing camp in 2001 and was trained by Fritz Sdunek , among others . By mid-2006 he won each of his 25 fights, 20 of them prematurely. Among other things, he was the 2003 Russian Champion and 2004 Intercontinental Champion of the IBO and boxed in Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Germany and Austria. In October 2006 he was able to box against Firat Arslan in a World Championship elimination match in Stuttgart , but was defeated shortly before the end of the fifth round due to the referee dropping out (tKo). Up to this point in time he was already in third place in the WBO world rankings.

He then scored a number of victories, including in 2008 against the amateur world champion Michael Simms . In October 2013 he defeated Mateusz Masternak (balance: 30-0, 22 knockout) by tKo in the eleventh round and became European Cruiserweight Champion ( EBU ). On September 27, 2014, he also managed a unanimous victory over Krzysztof Włodarczyk (49-2) and thus winning the WBC World Championship.

In May 2015 he defended the title early against Poland's Łukasz Janik (28-2). Due to training injuries, Drosd was unable to defend his title for a long time, his fight against Ilunga Makabu was postponed twice. Drosd was then declared Champion in Recess by the WBC. Although he lost his world championship belt, he can challenge the new world champion immediately after his recovery.
