Griselda Álvarez Ponce de León (born April 5, 1913 in Guadalajara , † March 26, 2009 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican writer and politician .

Life

Griselda Álvarez came from a Mexican family of politicians: her great-grandfather was the Mexican general Manuel Álvarez . Her father, Miguel Álvarez García, was a regional politician in Colima . Griselda Álvarez was also the Senator of Jalisco in 1976 and, when she was elected head of government in Colima in 1979, the first female president at state level in Mexico . Although she was previously a member of the PRI , she supported the demands of Andrés Manuel López Obrador ( PRD ) until her death . In 1996 she was awarded the Medalla Belisario Domínguez del Senado de la República .
