The Szczeliniec Wielki (German Große Heuscheuer , Czech Velká Hejšovina ) is 919  m high, the highest mountain in the Heuscheuergebirge (Polish Góry Stołowe ) in Poland . It can be accessed from Karłów ( Karlsberg ). The sandstone mountain is one of the most typical table mountains in Central Europe.

Origin of the name

The German name of the mountain was derived from its typical shape. The current Polish name is a post-war creation and means Great Split Mountain (Polish: Szczelina = column, fugue ). The Czech name is derived from the German name.

Location and surroundings

The Szczeliniec Wielki is 32 kilometers west of Kłodzko ( Glatz ) and 11 kilometers northeast of Kudowa-Zdrój ( Bad Kudowa ). At the foot of the mountain are the small towns of Karłów ( Karlsberg ) and Pasterka ( Passendorf ). To the north was the settlement of Klein-Karlsberg , first mentioned in 1747 , which was also known as the Karlsberg or Leierdörfel colony . After the transition to Poland in 1945, it was left to decay.

Immediately adjacent is the Szczeliniec Mały ( Little Haystack ), an equally striking but smaller mountain.

history

The Große Heuscheuer was opened in 1790 by Franz Pabel from Karlsberg. In the same year, King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia rose to the summit. In order to secure the Prussian border to Bohemia, the king had Fort Karl built on the Great Heuscheuer. He commissioned the engineer officer and later Major General Bonaventura von Rauch to do this . The then Major von Rauch was able to receive Johann Wolfgang von Goethe there on his 41st birthday on August 28, 1790. Goethe later made a geological description of the Szczeliniec Wielki.

Paths to the summit

From Karłów, as well as from Pasterka, a yellow marked hiking trail leads over the saddle between Szczeliniec Wielki and Szczeliniec Mały. From there a branch leads to the plateau of the mountain. An entrance fee is required for the ascent. A circular hiking trail opens up the mountain plateau and also leads through the labyrinths on the north side, which are well worth seeing.
