The Große Mirnitzspitze ( 2985  m above sea level ) is a mountain peak of the Schober group in East Tyrol ( Austria ). It lies on the border between the municipalities of Ainet and Nussdorf-Debant .

Origin of name

The name "Mirnitz" is first found in 1775 with the neighboring Mirnitz Terl (Mirnitzscharte). The mountain peak itself is called Miernitz Spitz in 1816 . The word Mirnitz has its origin in an area name used exclusively in the plural. The Mirnitzen , in the ÖK 50 Mirnitzboden card , is an alpine pasture of the Hofalm in the Hinterer Debanttal . Their name was subsequently transferred to the Mirnitzscharte, the Kleine and Große Mirnitzspitze, the Mirnitzbach, which runs through the Mirnitzboden, and the Mirnitzschneid, which ends north of the Mirnitzboden. Name researchers have put together different explanations for the derivation of the name. August Unterforcher brought the Mirnitz in connection with the Czech personal name Miren ( peace / quiet or name ) and would have the meaning of the famous . Nevertheless, according to Unterforcher, the name could also be derived from the Slovenian mur (black animal, black horse). The name researcher Kranzmayer, on the other hand, derives the name from me (wall, enclosure), whereby the image of the (dry) wall in East Tyrol was often transferred to scree slopes or rocky areas in the high mountains. The name researcher Hubert Bergmann doubts the first explanation, since a personal name is unlikely due to the remoteness.

location

The Große Mirnitzspitze lies on the municipal boundary between Ainet and Nussdorf-Debant . It lies between the Kleine Mirnitzspitze ( 2906  m above sea level ) in the north-west and the Alkuser Rotspitze ( 3053  m above sea level ) in the south-east. A ridge of rubble falls to the southwest from the Großer Mirnitzspitze to the Eastern Barreneggscharte ( 2985  m above sea level ), which separates the Mirnitzspitze from the Barrenegg ( 2954  m above sea level ). To the east of the Große Mirnitzscharte there is a cirque, from which the Tscharnakt can be reached via the Tscharnaktscharte ( 2584  m above sea level ) . To the west of the Great Mirnitzspitze is the Barrensee ( 2727  m above sea level ).

Promotion opportunities

The normal route to the Große Mirnitzspitze leads from the Hochschoberhütte or the Lienzer Hütte on the marked path into the Mirnitzscharte. From here, the narrow north-west ridge to the Kleine Mirnitzspitze is walked on, with the path leading past ridge towers on the right and climbing to the summit of the Kleine Mirnitzspitze. The rest of the way on the connecting ridge between the Mirnitz peaks, which also runs south-east, whereby two steep climbs measuring one pitch have to be overcome. ( II )

Other options include climbing the Großer Mirnitzspitze from the Barrensee into the incision of the connecting ridge between the Kleiner and Großer Mirnitzscharte or slightly from the Eastern Barreneckscharte over a rubble ridge. An ascent from the Tscharnaktscharte across the Kar north of the Alkuser Rotspitze is also an ascent variant.
