The great summer root ( Orobanche elatior ), also called high summer root, is a plant species from the genus of summer root ( Orobanche ) in the family of summer root plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

The great summer root is a 20 to 60 cm high, parasitic plant that parasitizes on knapweed species ( Centaurea ). The dense scale leaves on the stem are usually longer than the internodes .

inflorescence

The flowering time of the species extends from June to July. The crown is initially rose-red in color, but later turns reddish yellow, there are no glandular hairs on the outside. The upper lip is not or only indistinctly outlined. The back line of the crown is more or less evenly curved. The scar is colored yellow.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

Occurrence

The species occurs in Europe and Asia. Its distribution area includes Spain, France, Italy, the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Eastern Europe, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Great Britain, Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia and China. It grows on heat-favored edges and on semi-arid lawns. It prefers moderately dry, nutrient-poor limestone and gypsum soil. It occurs in Central Europe in societies of the order Brometalia or Origanetalia.
