The United Edlinger pond is an artificial pond south of Wolfsberg (Carinthia) and its name to the nature reserve United Edlinger bird sanctuary pond.

The Großedlinger pond was created by the settlement of the soil in the former mining area of St. Stefan in Lavanttal. Another development took place through the dredging of water bodies and through the formation of islands and shallow water zones. The water supply is provided by water from the Koralpe . It represents an important substitute biotope in the heavily agricultural Lower Lavant Valley .

Stiff sedge , common iris and broad-leaved cattails , as well as reeds, grow in the bank area . Black alder , buckthorn and willow grow directly behind the bank . Ruderal plants grow on the border to the arable land.

The area is a retreat for reptiles, amphibians and birds. The breeding birds here include reed warbler , reed warbler , reed bunting and stonechat . Many migratory birds use the bulk Edlinger pond as a resting place ( purple heron , little egret , night heron , white stork , black stork , gray goose , Wigeon , Gadwall , Common Teal , Little Bittern and various waders ).

Nature reserve

The Großedlinger pond was declared a nature reserve in 1981 (LGBl. No. 8/1981), which covers 5.8 hectares. It is owned by the Austrian Nature Conservation Union, Carinthia Regional Group. The condition of the nature reserve was assessed as satisfactory in 1993, while ecotourism by ornithologists and the unrestricted use of the area for hunting were assessed as impairing.
