Karl Alexander von Winkler

Karl Alexander von Winkler (born July 4 . Jul / 16th July  1860 greg. In Tallinn , †  5. August 1911 in Dresden ) was a Baltic German landscape painter and watercolorist .

Life

Karl Alexander von Winkler graduated from the cathedral school in the Estonian capital in 1879 . He studied linguistics at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu (then Imperial University of Dorpat ) until 1884 . During his studies he also attended drawing courses with Rudolf Julius von zur Mühlen (1845–1913). From 1889 to 1891 von Winkler studied painting in various places in Switzerland , France and Germany .

From 1892 to 1905 von Winkler lived mainly in the Estonian capital Tallinn ( Reval ). Later he settled in Dresden- Loschwitz .

After his death, von Winkler was transferred to the Baltic States and buried in the Mõigu cemetery (now part of Tallinn).

Karl August Winkler is mainly famous for his landscape and city views. They show u. a. the landscapes of Norway (1898) and the cities of Narva (1909) and Tallinn (1910).
