The Great Arctic Protected Area ( Russian Большой Арктический Заповедник , Bolshoi Arktitscheski Sapovednik) is a nature reserve (IUCN Ia) on the Taimyr Peninsula in northern Siberia . With an area of ​​around 41,692  km² , it is currently Russia 's largest sapovednik (protected area). The aim is to protect the tundra as well as the fauna and flora of the subarctic land and coastal areas.

The reserve consists of (coastal) land areas (about a quarter of the area) of the Taimyr peninsula in northern Siberia and sea areas of the Arctic Ocean belonging Kara Sea and numerous islands.

Geography and biodiversity

Around 4,000 indigenous dolgan and nganasans live there and traditionally hunt, fish and breed reindeer there.

The reserve contains a large wilderness that has not yet been touched by humans . The area includes tundra with mosses and lichens and arctic cold and frost debris deserts , which are home to polar bears , reindeer , walrus and beluga . Millions of sea ​​birds nest here in summer . A herd of musk oxen from Canada and Alaska was successfully established in 1974, long before the protected area was founded, and the population is now estimated at 3,000 to 4,000 animals.

During a German- Soviet expedition that led to the Taimyr peninsula in 1989, the idea for a protected area came up, which was founded on May 11, 1993.
