The big ax , often wrongly the big ax , is 2309  m above sea level. A. high mountain at the head of the Wildschönau valley in the Austrian state of Tyrol . It belongs to the Kitzbühel Alps and is the main summit of the ridge that separates the Wildschönau from the neighboring Alpbachtal to the west . About 500 meters north is the 2189  m high Seekopf and another 500 meters north of the Kleine Beil with 2197  m . The neighboring mountain in the south is the 2216  m high Gressenstein .

The Große Beil is a hiking mountain and is accessible from the south and east with marked hiking trails. The starting point is usually the Schönangeralm ( 1173  m ) at the head of the Wildschönau valley behind Auffach. In winter, the Große Beil is a popular ski tour .

The name of the mountain is not derived from the ax , but from a dialect term for a place where animals are hunted, and is therefore a masculine word .
