The Große Binnensee is a 4.8 km² beach lake in Schleswig-Holstein in the Plön district .

location

The lake through which the Kossau flows is about 2 kilometers northeast of Lütjenburg and 30 kilometers east of Kiel near the Hohwacht Bay . The communities of Hohwacht , Behrensdorf , Panker and the small town of Lütjenburg are located around the lake . The lake, which is almost at sea level, was separated from the Baltic Sea by a natural beach wall , so that the distance to it is only a few hundred meters in places. There is a connection to the Baltic Sea via the Kossau.

Lakeshore and surroundings

Due to its diversity of species (especially as a breeding area for numerous water bird species) in the eastern part, the Great Inland Lake is a nature reserve managed by NABU and may not be entered in this part of the shore zones either.

On the west bank of the lake is the Waterneverstorf estate with its classical manor house; on the south bank of the lake is the old castle , a hill fort from prehistoric times. There are also several striking burial mounds from the Bronze Age in the vicinity.
