The Große Bischofsweiher , also called Dechsendorfer Weiher , is located in the north of the Erlangen district of Dechsendorf . The 0.35 square kilometer pond is part of a local recreation area and the largest in a chain of around 60 carp ponds . The shore length of the lake is 3.8 kilometers.

use

The pond is used in summer for sailing , surfing , pedal boating and as a swimming lake , in winter for ice skating and ice stock sport . There is a campsite right on the shore .

On the bathing water map of the Stiftung Warentest , in the magazine test 6/2008, the pond is marked in red; d. H. Limit and guide values were exceeded several times. Several times, as in the 2007 bathing season, there was a time-limited bathing ban. In the following years there were repeated problems with excessive algae development ( eutrophication ).

The inflow from the Röttenbach was seen as the cause of the poor water quality for years . The clarified water from the localities of Röttenbach and Hemhofen is fed into this. As a remedial measure, the construction of a circulating ditch, as it already exists at the upper Little Bishop's Weiher, also around the Great Bishop's Weiher, is being proposed in joint action. Construction work began in February 2014 to create a renatured Röttenbach circuit there, which was completed in 2016.

Although the water of the Röttenbach sewage treatment plant corresponds to the values specified by the Water Management Office until 2010 (heavy rain events excluded), the poor water quality results from a very poor mix of nitrate and phosphate. In front of the Great Bishop's Pond, 1/3 of the water from the Röttenbach flows through the upper Small Bishop's Pond, which is biologically intact; then it flows through several reed ponds and only then flows into the large episcopal pond.

history

Early history

In the vicinity of the Great Bishop's Pond there are burial grounds from prehistoric times with burial mounds from the Hallstatt period and subsequent burials from the Latène period .

middle Ages

In 1504 the large bishop's pond was sold by the Baiersdorf bailiff to the bishop of Bamberg . The name of the carp pond indicates the medieval sale. The Bamberg bishops incorporated the water into their extensive pond property. A maritime master was used to manage the pond. In the floodplain area of the Röttenbach, swampy areas were drained in 1572.

Culture

The open-air event Klassik am See has been held every year on the bank since 2003 . In 2015 the event Jazz am See took place for the first time .

Protected areas

  • The Große Bischofsweiher and the landscape areas adjoining it to the south and west are designated as a landscape protection area of  Dechsendorfer Weihergebiet  with a size of 170 hectares.
  • The neighboring Kleine Bischofsweiher and the northern bank zones of the Großer Bischofsweiher have been  registered  with the EU Commission as the European Aischgrund bird sanctuary .
