The large wandering blue ( Lampides boeticus ) or long-tailed blue is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of the blue (Lycaenidae).

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of about 28 to 35 millimeters. Characteristic of the species are thin tails at the anal angle of the hind wings. The upper sides of the wings of the males are slightly bluish to gray-blue in color, occasionally with a slightly violet tinge, while the females in the inner field of the forewings have a slightly blue color, which turns into a gray hue on the outside. The hind wings show two black, white-rimmed eye spots on the upper sides at the anal corner , one of which is often very indistinct and blurred. On the gray undersides of the hind wings there is a net-like, bright drawing that fuses into a white band in the submarginal region . An orange spot can be seen at the base of the tails.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is small, yellow-white in color and has a fine mesh structure with many small bumps. The caterpillars have green or brownish colored specimens. They have a dark, sometimes spotty, extended back line and indistinct white slashes. The doll has a reddish-yellow basic color, from which a few brown spots stand out.

Similar species

  • Little wandering blue ( Leptotes pirithous ). As the name suggests, the moths are significantly smaller with a wingspan of around 24 to 27 millimeters. The main distinguishing feature is the lack of the white band on the underside of the hind wing. The zebra-like striped drawing of the underside of pirithous also shines through slightly to the front.

distribution

The species occurs in the Mediterranean region of southern Europe, the Canary Islands , North Africa , subtropical and steppe-like areas in the Asian region as well as to the tropics of Southeast Asia , Africa and Australia . As a migrant butterfly , it sometimes flies into Germany and can even reach the British Isles . The animals live in hot, dry, flower-rich places.

Way of life

The Great Blue Blue flies in uninterrupted generations in southern regions. Due to their widespread distribution, the caterpillars live on different, sometimes country-specific plants, including various legumes (Fabaceae), for example the following: Yellow bladder bush ( Colutea arborescens ) and broom ( Cytisus scoparius ). They feed primarily on the flowers and fruit capsules, in which they also prefer to live. Occasionally they can be harmful to peas ( Pisum sativum ) and beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris ).

Hazard and protection

The species is not native to Germany . Nevertheless, it appears occasionally in Germany with sometimes long intervals.
