Greater Poland Lake District

The Greater Poland Lake District ( Pojezierze Wielkopolskie in Polish ) is located in the center of Poland . The region is located in the northeast of the Greater Poland Voivodeship and in the west of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship . It borders on the Vistula Valley to the north and east and the Warta Valley to the south and west . The nets have their origins in the Wielkopolska Lake District. To the west of the area is the city of Poznan , to the east Ślesin and Kruszwica .

People settled in the Wielkopolska Lake District as early as the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the reconstructed Biskupin settlement , one of the largest museum settlements of its kind. This is where the starting point of Polish history is set in the 9th century, when Popiel von Piast was overthrown in Kruszwica on the Gopło (Goplosee) and became the ruler of the Polans . The first stone castle and church in Poland was located in Ostrów Lednicki in Lake Lednica . The first Polish capital Gnesen is also located in the Greater Poland Lake District. Numerous (pre) Romanesque buildings can be found scattered on it. In Licheń Stary there is the Basilica of Our Lady of Licheń , the largest church in Poland.

The Wielkopolska Lake District is shaped by hundreds of lakes and moraine hills from the Ice Age and is ideal for water sports. Many large lakes (e.g. the Goplosee) are connected to the network, so that canoeists and sailors can practically find a network of many kilometers of waterways.

The name Greater Poland goes back to the Latin term Polonia Maius , which, in contrast to the term Polonia Minus ( Lesser Poland around Krakow ) describes the area around Posen .
