The megalithic graves near Dewitz were two megalithic tombs from the Neolithic deep-engraving ceramic culture near Dewitz , a district of the Altmärkische Höhe community in the Stendal district , Saxony-Anhalt . Both were destroyed in the 19th century.

location

The two graves were located northwest of Dewitz on the border with the village of Gagel . They were about 80 m apart. To the east are the three remaining large stone graves near Bretsch .

Research history

The two systems were first documented in the 1830s by Johann Friedrich Danneil . When the great stone graves of the Altmark were taken up again in the 1890s , Eduard Krause and Otto Schoetensack discovered that both graves had been completely removed in the meantime as part of the separation .

description

Grave 1

Grave 1 had a chamber with a length of 8.5 m and a width of 3.5 m. When Danneil took the picture, the two outer capstones were still present. Due to the length of the burial chamber, it must have been a large dolmen or a passage grave .

Grave 2

Grave 2 had a stone enclosure with a length of 7.2 m and a width of 5.7 m. Several enclosing stones were already missing when Danneil was taken. Dimensions of the burial chamber are not available. However, since the overall appearance of the grave was very similar to the neighboring one, it was also likely to have been a large dolmen or a passage grave.
