The Groß Reken Großsteingrab (also called Großsteingrab Reken-Maria Veen or Großsteingrab im Sandheck ) was a megalithic grave of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Groß Reken , a district of Reken in the Borken district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was gradually destroyed between the middle of the 19th century and 1930.

location

The grave was located west of Maria Veen on a dune range near Sandheck. Its exact location is unknown. The field name Die hilligen Hölteken or Die hilligen Kämpe has been handed down . According to Hubert Tenbohlen, this point could have been south of Sandheck on the edge of a forest. Clearing work for the field expansion was carried out here until 1930. There is also the hallway name Kleine Kämpchen . In the forest there are several Bronze Age burial mounds .

Research history

According to statements from older residents who were admitted in 1937, the destruction of the grave began in the mid-19th century. The stones were used for building foundations. The last stones were removed in 1930. Some stones were built into a sheepfold that was demolished in 1952. The stones were then used by the Middelbauerschaft shooting club to beautify the grounds of the memorial in Maria Veen. Other stones that could possibly be assigned to the large stone grave appeared in 2006 when a house built in 1843 was demolished.

In 2007 the LWL Archeology for Westphalia and the Geophysical Institute of the University of Münster carried out geophysical measurements in the area of the presumed location of the grave, but they did not produce any clear results.

description

There is no information about dimensions, orientation or the exact type of grave. But it should have been a larger facility. In 1930 there were still nine stones left, originally there were probably significantly more.

Finds

During the demolition of the complex, ceramic vessels were repeatedly found, most of which have been lost. All that has been preserved is a 10 cm high collar bottle . Today it is in the external storage of the LWL Museum for Archeology in Münster - Coerde .
