Sprockhoff no. 359

The megalithic graves near Kowalz were three megalithic tombs of the Neolithic funnel cup culture near Kowalz , a district of Thelkow in the Rostock district ( Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ). Today there is only one grave. It bears the Sprockhoff number 359. The other two systems were destroyed in the late 18th century.

location

Grave 1 is located about 1 km east of Kowalz in a field. According to the pharmacist Stockfisch from Zarrentin, the two graves destroyed in 1792/73 were in the immediate vicinity. According to his report, all three systems were in a slight arc about 80-90 paces (about 60-70 m) apart. The large stone grave Vilz is located 2.8 km west-southwest .

description

Grave 1

According to Stockfisch's testimony, the grave had a sandy mound with a length of 30-40 feet (about 9.5-12.5 m) and a width of 16-20 feet (about 5-6 m). During the construction of the manor house of the Kowalz manor, the grave was badly destroyed in 1792/93 for the purpose of extracting building material. Of the north-west-south-east oriented grave chamber, only two wall stones on the long sides, one facing each other and preserved in situ, one wall stone that has overturned to the outside, and one carried capstone remain. The original dimensions can no longer be determined. Ernst Sprockhoff suspected that it was a dolmen , but Ewald Schuldt classified the complex as a megalithic grave of an indeterminable type.

Grave 2

The complex had a mound of the same type as grave 1. There is no further information about the grave chamber. The grave was probably completely removed in 1792/93.

Grave 3

Grave 3 also had a mound of the same type as grave 1. There is no further information about the grave chamber. This grave was probably completely demolished in 1792/93.

Finds

Several finds were recovered from the graves without it being clear which grave they belong to. 1792/93 were two flint - hatchets , a klöpfelförmiger stone, a ring (probably from a Secondary burial ) found and several pottery fragments. These items were handed over to the master hunter von Gubkow , who wanted to bequeath them to the Rostock Museum. Their whereabouts are unclear. In 1883, the Grand Ducal Museum of Schwerin (today's Archaeological State Museum ) was given a diorite ax that is said to have come from a “megalithic grave” near Kowalz.
