Large stone grave Warnstedt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The large stone grave Warnstedt was a Neolithic megalithic grave in Warnstedt , a district of Thale in the Harz district , Saxony-Anhalt . It was archaeologically examined in 1864 and later completely destroyed.

location

The grave was 100 m north of Warnstedt on a flat slope.

description

The complex had a pile of mounds, which contained an east-west oriented burial chamber 5 m long and 1.5 m high. This consisted of stone slabs, of which both wall and cover slabs were preserved during the excavation. A transversely positioned plate divided the chamber in half. It is not known whether the chamber was built at ground level or sunk into the ground.

Only the western part of the burial chamber was examined. No information was given on possible burials. Ten ceramic vessels, several flint blades , numerous pierced predator teeth and eagle claws were found among the additions . The only surviving vessel that presumably comes from this grave is a cup that is kept in the Harz Museum in Wernigerode , but is kept under the Cattenstedt site . This cup comes from the late Neolithic Bernburg culture . The large number of pierced animal teeth that are typical for them speaks for an assignment of the grave to this culture.
