Groblershoop ( Afrikaans ; German for example: "Grobler's Hope") is a town in the South African province of Northern Cape . It is located in the ZF Mgcawu district and is the administrative seat of the Local Municipality ! Kheis .

geography

In 2011, Groblershoop had 4938 inhabitants (2011 census). Most of the residents live in the southeastern part of the city called Stutterheim, which was reserved for the Coloreds during the apartheid period . Groblershoop is located near the south bank of the Oranje and is also known as the “gateway to the Green Kalahari ”, a section of the Oranje that is rich in islands and vegetation and located downstream in a desert-like environment.

history

The place was founded in 1914 on the Sternham farm and renamed in 1939 after the former Agriculture Minister Piet Grobler. From 1929 to 1933 the Boegoeberg Dam was built upstream in the Orange River , which led to an upswing in the town.

Economy and Transport

Groblershoop is a center of viticulture that is operated in the Oranjetal. Oranjerivier Wine Cellars is the second largest wine-growing cooperative in the world . There is a slaughterhouse in Groblershoop. Tourism also plays a role.

The National Route 10 leads approximately in a northwest-southeast direction through the city and connects Upington with Prieska . The National Route 8 begins in Groblershoop and continue eastbound towards Kimberley . South of the city was the Groblershoop Airstrip, which was abandoned. To the north, the Sishen – Saldanha railway line passes Groblershoop.
