The Groovie Ghoulies were an American horror punk band from Sacramento , California that was formed in 1983 and disbanded in 2007. The line-up changed frequently over the years, so that the band's founder, as well as bassist and singer Jeff Alexander, aka Kepi, remained the only constant member. The band name is borrowed from the 1970 animated series Groovie Goolies , an offshoot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch .

Band history

The Groovie Ghoulies draw their musical influences from early punk bands like the Ramones or The Dickies , as well as from garage rock and bubblegum groups of the 1960s, with simple riffs and catchy melodies. Lyrically, her songs deal mainly with themes from horror trash and science fiction. Founded in 1983, the group's first release followed three years later with the single Flying Saucer . The debut album Appetite for Adrenochrome was recorded in 1989. Nevertheless, it was still years before an initially local popularity set in in 1994, which resulted in the third album World Contact Day and the contract with Lookout! Records could increase. The AV Club website praises the band's sound as a “mixture of the Misfits and the Archies ”. The Ox-Fanzine praises the sound of the album as "both flippant and really rocking sound".

1990 married Alexander Sparman, who later joined the band. As a married couple, they formed the nucleus of the Groovie Ghoulies. From 1997 tours in Europe followed. After six albums he switched to the Dutch label Stardumb Records, under the 2002 Go! Stories appeared. Described as "motley comic-pop-punk with sparkling Simpelst melodies" with a "squawking voice", the Ox-Fanzine draws another positive conclusion.

On May 9, 2007, the band announced their breakup. The main reason given was that after the divorce of longtime members Jeff Alexander and Rochelle Sparman, it became increasingly difficult to keep the band alive. In 2008 two tribute albums dedicated to the Groovie Ghoulies, Let's Go Ghoulie under the US label Knowhere Records, and The Kids Go Go Go Crazy from the German label Kamikaze Records were released.
