Groppello Gentile is a red wine variety . It is an autochthonous variety from northern Italy. Its cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Brescia , Vicenza and Massa-Carrara . The main growing area is the shores of Lake Garda on the side of the city of Brescia . In the 1990s, 488 hectares of planted vineyards were raised.

The late-ripening variety is vigorous and high-yielding. It produces ruby ​​red wines with a medium alcohol content and a slight acidity . The wines can have a fine character and find their way into the DOC wines of Garda .

In addition to the Groppello Gentile, there are also the Groppello Bianco , Groppello di Mocasina and Groppello di Santo Stefano grape varieties .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is greenish and hairy only cobwebs. The young leaves are only initially hairy and light green in color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are almost pentagonal, elongated and three-lobed. The stem bay is open in a V-shape. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are small and tight compared to the grape varieties.
  • The large grape is conical to cylindrical, elongated and shouldered. The round berries are medium-sized and bluish-purple in color. The berry skin is thick, the flesh is juicy and has a neutral taste.

Groppello Gentile ripens around 40 days after the Gutedel variety and is therefore considered to ripen very late in an international comparison.
