The Anton pit was a former underground mine in the Wolfach district in the Black Forest . The mine was in operation from 1834 to 1850 and has been used as a geoscientific observatory since 1972 .

history

The first mining activities in the area of the Anton mine began in the 1770s. The planned exploitation of the mine took place in the years 1834 to 1850, where about 740 kg of silver and 189,487 kg of cobalt ore were mined. Around 1970 the abandoned Anton pit was selected for a geophysical observatory that was yet to be built, which was put into operation in 1972 as the Geoscientific Joint Observatory Wolfach (Black Forest Oberservatory, BFO) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Stuttgart . The building costs of 750,000 DM were borne by the Volkswagen Foundation.
