location

The Ludwig mining field is located in the west of the municipality of Wald-Michelbach, on the mountain side of the Am Wetzel path .

history

The main conveyor tunnel of the Ludwig pit

From 1889 to 1918 in the pit at Ludwig Zechstein - dolomite bound Pyrolusit (pyrolusite), Psilomelan (Hartmanganerz) and Wad (Manga foam) over four bays and two tunnels mined. In the years from 1889 to 1893, the Siegen mining company Hesse and Schulte operated the mine; Siegener Eisenindustrie AG from 1901 to 1918.

The routes are on several levels and have a total length of at least 1800 meters. Several mouth holes served as access to the tunnels. An average of around 30 miners are said to have mined a total of 7,430 tons of manganese ore here, together with the neighboring Morgenstern mine . The mined ore was cleaned in a retention basin and transported away by carts. From 1901, the ore was transported from the Unter-Wald-Michelbach train station to smelting by train. The transport to the station, 2.8 km away, was accomplished with a steam-powered cable car .

The mining office was located in the colliery house built around 1893 . It also served as accommodation for the non-resident miners. The building is now privately owned.

Today only one mouth hole is accessible. It leads to tunnel I of the Ludwig pit, which is now a visitor mine. The Ludwig pit was the smallest mine in the Ludwig pit field. On February 12, 1993 the tunnel was opened to visitors. Of the 110 meters of the tunnel, around 85 meters are accessible. The clear height of the accessible part is 1.7 to 2 meters. The temperature inside is 8 to 11 ° C. The mine has about 1200 visitors a year.

It is not known why the mine was closed in 1918. After it was closed, the mine was used as an air raid shelter during World War II . In the post-war period it was used to store potatoes and cider . It later served as a garbage dump until the mouth holes were kept.
