Pits on a 19th century map

Gruben was the name of the village, which has been called Scharfenberg since 1920 and is located in the village of the same name, which belongs to the municipality of Klipphausen in the district of Meißen in Saxony .

geography

The central part of the village of Scharfenberg, southeast of Meißen in the Meißner highlands , was referred to as pits . Neighboring settlements of the former mine are Naustadt in the south, Bergwerk in the east and Reppnitz in the northwest. Two kilometers further north, but already on the other side of the Elbe , is today's Coswig district of Sörnewitz .

history

The place name Gruben, like that of the neighboring town of Bergwerk, is related to the mining industry around Scharfenberg since the Middle Ages. The place name was first mentioned in 1294 as "de argentifodinis sive montibus circa Scharfenberg", and in 1350 it appears as "Grubin". The place mines was only much later as irregular smallholding in the district Reppnitz and finds mention in 1764. The village was administered by the Meissen Hereditary Authority . The lords of Scharfenberg Castle exercised the manorial rule . A rural community that emerged in the 19th century was named after the village , which, in addition to pits themselves, also included mines, Reppina , Pegenau , Reppnitz and Scharfenberg Castle. After this castle, the community renamed itself to Scharfenberg in 1920 . It was incorporated into Klipphausen on January 1, 1999.
