Grupo Marsans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Grupo Marsans was a Spanish tourism and aviation company. It belonged to the Spanish entrepreneur Gerardo Díaz Ferrán , the former owner of Spanair , Air Comet and Viajes Marsans. He was arrested on December 3, 2012 for asset concealment and money laundering.

The company was founded in Barcelona in 1908 . It was active in Spain , Portugal , France , Italy , Brazil , Mexico , Venezuela , Argentina and had over 12,000 employees. The group offered flights, hotels and vacation trips. On April 20, 2010 the IATA ( International Air Transport Association ) revoked "Viajes Marsans" the license to sell airline tickets. The 3,500 employees of "Viajes Marsans" received no salary in March and April 2010.

The weekly newspaper Die Zeit outlined the situation on May 5, 2010:

Gerardo Díaz Ferrán has hit several companies, including the Spanish airline Air Comet, against the wall. He withdrew 238 million euros from the company treasury of his travel company Viajes Marsans. Nobody knows where the money went. The German fund company Union Investment owes Marsans four million euros in rent and his 3,500 employees the salary for the past two months. In any other democratic country he would be suspected of fraud. But not in Spain: The 67-year-old is even head of the Spanish employers' association CEOE. Economics minister Elena Salgado also continues to support the entrepreneur.

The newspaper Handelsblatt wrote in a column on May 2, 2010:

The Spanish employer president watches as his own companies slide into bankruptcy. But that doesn't bother him in his office.

Airlines

Grupo Marsans held shares in the following airlines:

In 2008 Marsans was pushed for sale to the Republic of Argentina.
In 2007, 95 percent was sold to the Scandinavian SAS Group .
